We are writing to document the findings of the Invasive Aquatic Plant Screening Surveys conducted on the Norway Lakes during the summer of 2008 by Lake & Watershed Resource Management Associates.  The surveys, contracted by the Lakes Association of Norway, were conducted on the following four waterbodies on the dates indicated:

7/30/08

Hobbs Pond (Little Pennesseewassee)

MIDAS# 367

9/28, 10/3 & 10/8/08

North Pond

MIDAS# 3500

(Plus channel through the wetland to the boat landing)

9/17, 9/19, 9/22 & 9/24/08

Pennesseewassee Lake

MIDAS# 3434

7/30/08

Sand Pond

MIDSAS# 3432

All surveys were classified as Level 3, which means that the entire littoral zone of the waterbody was included in the survey.  (The littoral zone is defined as the portion of the waterbody where sunlight penetrates to the bottom and where rooted aquatic plants grow.)

All waterbodies were screened for the presence of the eleven invasive aquatic plants listed by Maine law as imminent threats to Maine waters: Brazilian elodea, curly-leaf pondweed, Eurasian water-milfoil, European Frogbit, European naiad, fanwort, parrot feather, yellow floating heart, variable water-milfoil, water chestnut, and hydrilla.

The surveys were conducted under suitable conditions (good light, relatively calm water) using standardized methods and equipment.

FINDINGS:  No invasive aquatic plants were observed in any of the four lakes.  Chinese mystery snails, a large non-native snail species, were observed and noted as abundant in Hobbs Pond, North Pond (and its associated wetland) and Pennesseewassee Lake.

Though complete, detailed native plant inventories were not part of the 2008 survey project; dominant native plants were noted in all four waterbodies.  Below is a summary of the native plant data.  (The most dominant species in each waterbody, when noted, are listed in bold font.)
